| I fell in love with clown in 2001 at the Dell'Arte School of Physical Theatre. Clown is the most honest art form I have found. A clown can say the unsaid and point out the truth even when the truth is something everyone fears. Gwendolyn Rooker and I took a clown show we created to Egypt in February of 2006. We performed at orphanages, schools, The Cancer Institute of Egypt, and The American University of Cairo. This trip made me realize that clown can helping begin conversations between conflicted societies. Clown is an art form that transcends culture and language. Despite our foreignness in a Middle Eastern country, audiences were incredibly enthusiastic. In the end performers and audiences alike saw they had much more in common than what appeared on the surface. During our stay we had only begun to scratch the surface of possibilities. Due to the projects success within the community, we are planning to return to Egypt to continue our work within the year. | ||
